The Islamic calendar is observed in Dubai, and although the period of fasting in Ramadan (in 2004 it will be from 15OCT-15NOV) means that no alcohol is served during the daylight hours for the duration, in the evenings, when fast is broken at Iftar, the city comes alive with families enjoying themselves, and it is a magical time to visit the country.

The festival of Eid al Fitr is observed in the days following Ramadan, and this is a time when families get together and give presents.
